Obsessed with Stuff? Time to let go

If a knock on the front door has you either running around hiding piles of stuff in a closet or anticipating a film crew from the next episode of Hoarders on your doorstep, you are not alone.

We are a nation obsessed with stuff, with no place to put it.

Professional organizers say putting clutter in its place helps ease stress, simplifies life and is easily achieved through practical solutions.

If you have a little more money to spend, you may want to consider the revolutionary product that made its celebrated debut in Canada at February’s Home Show in Toronto.

Ideal for creating a multi-purpose room, combining a spare bedroom with a home office, Hiddenbed Canada offers a desk and bed configuration that effortlessly rotates up and down keeping both your office and bed units intact.

“We’ve designed entire rooms around them,” says Kaylie Schwartz, a senior design consultant with Custom Closet Organizers Inc. & Hiddenbed Canada in Thornhill.

First introduced to the United States on Oprah in 2007, this revolutionary system actually creates space as it eliminates the need for separate bed and desk units. In just a few seconds, your workstation can be transformed in to a bed for sleeping, without having to remove anything.

Working much like a Ferris wheel, when the bed unit is lowered down a tier, the desk also rotates 45 degrees to stow below the bed while remaining parallel to the floor.

“You can leave all the mess on your desk and deal with it in the morning,” explains Ms Schwartz, adding that with a clearance of 17 inches and accommodating a large computer case, monitor, keyboard and other accessories that can remain plugged in, nothing needs to be removed during transformation.

Ranging in price from just over $2,000 for a single bed up to $3,900 for a bunk bed style, Hiddenbeds are great for anyone seeking to maximize space and function.

“By integrating additional shelving, drawers and hanging systems, people can turn a small room in to a bedroom, office and closet,” says Ms Schwartz. “The result is an organized environment with minimal care so you can sleep well knowing you’ve got everything under control at the pull of a handle.”

No matter what option you choose to finally get organized, the key is to divide and conquer. You’ll be more likely to use something and put it away (and remember you even own it in the first place), if you can see it. Unorganized drawers, closets and even whole rooms are really only good for one thing — hiding what you are looking for.

But if you still can’t pull the trigger on purging or find it difficult to visualize a space, it may be time to call in the bug guns. Lucky for you, most companies dedicated to storage solutions also offer the services of professional organizers.
